EDUCATION FOR RURAL GIRLS

Welcome to The Buddies Program website. I thank you for your interest. I am excited about this program because it uses education as weapon for change. I started being aware of the power in education when I would avoid helping in the maize field because I was “studying.” More seriously, education allowed me to critically engage in my community, cross boarders and cultures and experience life anew. It is because of opportunities in education that I believe that The Buddies Program remains much needed and relevant in Swaziland.
The buddies program uses tutors, who are Swazi university students; to help students from underperforming rural schools in Swaziland do better in their final national exam. Higher education is free in Swaziland, but by default, this opportunity is available mostly to students from urban areas that tend to be from schools with better resources. This program complements the work done by teachers in schools with limited facilities by helping students go through their national exam past papers one-on-one with our tutors. More importantly, our tutors forge a strong relationship with students and share stories about their success and opportunities.
